Each year on June 14, Americans celebrate Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
The first official U.S. flag featured 13 stars and 13 stripes, representing the original thirteen colonies that declared their independence from Great Britain. Over the years, stars were added as new states joined the Union, but the thirteen stripes remain as a reminder of our nation’s beginnings.
Although Flag Day is not a federal holiday, communities across the country observe the day with patriotic ceremonies, educational programs, and displays of the American flag.
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Flag Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the ideals of liberty, unity, and self-government that have guided our nation for nearly two and a half centuries.
